CHEESE FESTIVAL - 29 April to 2 May
Report from Charné le Roux

As our members know, Slow Food Cape Town offers regular activities to promote its philosophy including meals, tastings, lectures and producer visits. We are also involved in cheese appreciation and the recognition of South African artisanal cheesemakers and their cheeses. Annually a panel consisting of Slow Food committee members and cheese experts taste a selection of cheeses manufactured according to Slow Food philosophy, and merit awards are presented to those selected. The 2011 Slow Food Award ceremony took place on 30 April at the ever popular South African Cheese Festival in Stellenbosch. The winners represented many regions across the country and a broad variety of cheeses. Members should try their excellent products.

The names of the Slow Food Awards winners and their cheeses are:

1. Goat butter from Gretha van der Colff, Gannabos, Western Cape.
2. Belnori Chevre (large and small) made by Rina and Norman Belcher of Belnori
    Boutique Cheesery, Gauteng.
3. Drakensberg from Swissland by Fran Vermaak, Western Cape.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - 11 May

As usual, this was held at Silwood Kitchen. The Committee for the coming year consists of: Stephen Flesch (Leader and Treasurer), Lorna van Besouw (Secretary), Pat Rademeyer (Membership Secretary), Cecily van Gend (Newsletter Editor), Carianne Wilson, Charné le Roux, Erika Reynolds and Vic de Valdorf.

Dr Nicky Allsopp, from Kirstenbosch, gave a fascinating talk about the types of mushrooms growing in the environs of Cape Town. Members then enjoyed a supper of Silwood Kitchen soups, breads from Knead, Pain de Vie at De Oude Bank Bakkerij, cheeses from The Big Cheese, and Slow wines. A highlight was the bread baked by Fritz Schoon, who has an artisanal bakery, De Oude Bank Bakkerij in Church Street Stellenbosch. Members may be interested in the review by fellow Slow Foodie, Chris von Ulmenstein which can be found at Chris von Ulmenstein, Food news, Restaurant news, Stellenbosch, Whale Cottage Portfolio. COOKING DEMONSTRATION AND LUNCH AT THE FOOD BARN - 16 June

On Thursday 16 June members braved the weather to attend one of Franck Dangereux’s exciting demonstrations. They watched as he prepared, with great verve and flair, a Tuna Tartare with a soya and ginger sauce and aioli; kinglip dumplings in an Asian broth, and pumpkin risotto. His demonstration was followed by a lunch featuring some of the dishes we had watched him prepare. Despite, or perhaps because of the deluge viewed through the windows, this was a most convivial occasion.

OCEAN JEWELS

Members who frequent the Neighbourgoods market will already be familiar with Julie Carter’s fresh fish stall. She says: ‘Fish and the fishing industry have become my passion. My father and brother have always had an infatuation with the sea and are addicted to the excitement and thrill of fishing. My father grew up in Gansbaai and there were many nights that the fish he caught kept the family satisfied at dinner. Preparing, cooking and eating fish has been part of my upbringing. I studied in the hospitality industry. Being in the fish business feels just right. I sell only the freshest fish caught in and around the False Bay coastline. I am a SASSI (South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) participant and consider sustainability an essential."
