21 Queen Victoria Street, Stanford
We have arranged a visit to this delightful country deli and restaurant in Stanford, owned by Slow Food members Jero and Catch Revett. Both are passionate foodies who love to experiment and share, falling back on traditions passed down by their ‘familia Italiana’ of respect for the land, using what is at hand, focusing on natural, unprocessed, seasonal and local food. What produce they don’t grow in their organic home garden they buy from neighbours and local farmers, importing only some of their deli meats from Italy. Jero’s home-baked Pane di Mare (a unique artisan ciabatta made using sea water) is now famous, as is their version of ‘Slow Food’.
Of their life in Stanford Jero writes: “Chooks in our garden, horses grazing next door and an owl on the lamp post outside, the neighbours with a lamb and a couple of ducks. A surf in the ocean, a paddle down the river, a hike to a waterfall – we’ve got it all. Homemade yogurt and cheese, a farm butchery and lots of local enterprise offering fresh seasonal produce. With all this we are very aware of the environment and so of course we recycle and do our bit wherever we can – It all adds to the charm of living this lifestyle and how we enjoy, how we play, live and eat.”
We’ll start with a visit to Jero’s organic vegetable garden, where he will have harvested many of the ingredients for our lunch, and then take our places at long tables at his restaurant for the Italian Feast:

For those who would like to arrive in Stanford a little earlier, there is a weekly ‘organic food market’ that is held every Saturday from 9 am to 12. All the contributors are locals, who either make, grow or produce a variety of fare including artisanal cheeses, jams and chutneys, pates, quiches, organic and other home-grown vegetables, as well as sweet confections. It’s a small market, but it offers a nice balance of produce.
