Barrel lunch in the cellar at Beaumont Wines in Bot River

Saturday, 28h July 2012 from 12h30 for 13h00
Beaumont Wines

Beaumont Wines is a charming, family-run farm and winery situated in the quaint Overberg village of Bot River. The farm – home to the region’s oldest wine cellar – is steeped in history, dating back to the 1700s. Established as a Dutch East India Company station in 1785, it served as an important point on the vital routes into the interior. The Bot River ward is one of the newest in South Africa and falls under the Walker Bay Region. In the 1970s, after decades of dormancy, Raoul and Jayne Beaumont again planted vines on the farm’s ancient shale soils and the historic wine cellar with its antique machinery was revived to start producing an artisanal range of wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Bot River Valley. A deep understanding of our soils and vines through these decades of experience is the bedrock of our approach.

The family business is now run by Sebastian Beaumont, who took over this responsibility from Jayne Beaumont in 2010. The focus of the business is to produce amazing Chenin Blanc and complex, elegant red wines that capture the essence of their terroir. Along with a very traditional winery where the fine art of winemaking is still practised using time-honoured open fermenters, the farm is also home to one of the Overberg’s most historic mill houses.

The incredible enthusiasm and dedication of Andy Selfe has recently seen the mill being restored, and for the first time in decades the ancient water mill is again turning. It houses three different mill machines, one of which is the Vitruvian which is driven by the beautiful wooden water wheel that is again powered by a natural stream – for the first time in 80 years! The Beaumont mill is one of the only mills in South Africa to be powered by water, and inside the mill house you can see the on-going and painstaking restoration process of the beautiful wooden machinery and millstones.

It is hoped to have the mill working on the day of the lunch, so that members can see it in operation and purchase the stone-ground flour
